If you’re wondering why the Rice Hotel shown in the 1907 Sanborn map doesn’t look quite right, that’s because the version we are familiar with today wasn’t built until 1912.

The version shown in the Sanborn map was a completely different building that was built in 1881. The 1881 Rice Hotel had a wealth of foundational issues, which led to its eventual demolition and subsequent rebuild 31 years later in 1912.
