The Majestic Theatre (Texas Ave)

The majority of Houstonians today have no recollection of this building as a theater. Instead, most of us remember this as an extension of the Houston Chronicle complex.
There were three Majestic Theatre locations in Houston:
- 1306 Congress Avenue, opened in 1905
- 800 Texas Avenue, opened in 1911
- 908 Rusk avenue, opened in 1923
The Majestic Theatre in the photo above was renamed the Palace Theatre in 1923, after the Rusk Avenue location’s opening. In 1918, the Chamber of Commerce building was constructed to the west of, and above, the Majestic Theatre.

In 1946, the theatre closed and reopened as offices for the Houston Chronicle.
The Houston Chronicle campus, including the theatre, was sadly demolished in 2016. Today, the Texas Tower occupies the entire block.
